How to troubleshoot no video feed for Axis cameras with Zipstream

Introduction

Sometimes user can experience issues with their Axis cameras. The Camera is shown online and HTTP and ONVIF Connections are in Green in Camera settings but the Video connection is Red on Admin Portal. The issue is not fixed even after resetting or rebooting the camera. The video offline issue can be due to the initiation of the Zipstream feature on the camera. This article will guide you through understanding and troubleshooting this issue.

Understanding Zipstream and GOP Interval

Zipstream is a technology used in Axis cameras to optimize video streams by dynamically adjusting the Group of Pictures (GOP) interval. In scenarios with minimal motion, the camera may extend the GOP interval to several tens of seconds, sometimes even minutes.

Our platform requires the receipt of two I-frames to commence video streaming. If the I-frame is not received within a certain timeframe after the connection initialization, our servers may assume a problem and attempt to reinitialize the connection. This could result in a loop where the camera reconnects just after the previous I-frame was sent, causing repeated connection resets.

Steps to Troubleshoot

Check the Zipstream Setting

  • Access the camera's Web UI
  • Navigate to the Stream menu
  • Check the current Zipstream setting. If it is set to Medium or higher, consider reducing it to a lower level or disabling it entirely.

Adjust Zipstream and GOP Interval

  • Lower the Zipstream setting. This can help reduce the GOP interval, ensuring that I-frames are sent more frequently.

  • If you disable Zipstream, it ensures that the GOP interval remains shorter, allowing for more consistent receipt of I-frames.

    Reboot the Camera

  • After making changes to the Stream menu, reboot the camera. This step is crucial as it ensures that the new parameters are active. Some changes might be applied immediately, but a reboot is recommended to ensure all settings are properly configured.

  • Monitor the Video Feed

  • After the reboot, monitor the video feed to ensure it comes online and remains stable.
  • If the video feed still does not come online, repeat the steps and ensure that all settings are correctly configured.

  • Additional Tips

  • Network Stability: Ensure that your network is stable. Frequent disconnects can intensify issues related to the receipt of I-frames.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep the camera’s firmware up to date. Manufacturers often release updates that address known issues and improve performance.

Troubleshooting no video feed issues with Axis cameras that use Zipstream can be challenging, but understanding how Zipstream and GOP intervals work can significantly aid in resolving the problem.

By adjusting the Zipstream setting, rebooting the camera, and ensuring a stable network, you can improve the reliability of your video feed.
