NVR Rebooting Randomly — Possible Causes and Troubleshooting

A customer may experience a situation where an NVR (recorder) reboots randomly while connected to the 3dEYE platform. The issue does not occur when the device is disconnected from 3dEYE servers, which can make it appear related to the cloud connection or the Push Module integration.

Possible Cause

This behaviour can occur if the camera connected to the NVR is on a Fixed Plan and is streaming video at a bitrate or resolution significantly higher than the limits defined in its plan.

3dEYE’s cloud infrastructure includes automated logic to maintain consistent performance and enforce correct configuration parameters for all connected devices. When a camera continuously streams above its allowed bitrate threshold (more than 20% higher than plan specifications), the system takes corrective actions to prevent excessive bandwidth consumption and ensure compliance.

System Logic and Automatic Corrections

When an over-bitrate condition is detected, the 3dEYE servers follow this sequence of actions:

  1. Configuration Enforcement:
The server first sends a “Save Configuration” command via ONVIF, attempting to overwrite the camera’s current settings with the correct parameters defined by the billing plan.

  2. RTSP Session Restart:
If the camera does not adjust its stream parameters, the system attempts to restart the RTSP session by dropping and reconnecting the stream.

    • This may cause a brief 2–10 second gap in recorded video.

  3. Device Reboot (Last Resort):
If the problem persists after these steps, the system will issue a reboot command over ONVIF protocol to the device as a final measure to enforce correct operation.

Between each stage, the system introduces a 15–30 minute cooldown period, allowing the device time to stabilize before proceeding to the next corrective step.

What to Check

  1. Confirm the Plan Type:
Verify whether the camera is on a Fixed Plan. If so, ensure the configured bitrate and resolution match the plan specifications.

  2. Review the NVR Camera Settings:

    • Check the bitrate, resolution, and stream settings (main/sub-stream).

    • If the values are significantly higher than the plan allows, adjust them accordingly.

  3. Monitor After Adjustment:
Once parameters are aligned with the plan limits, monitor the recorder’s behavior to confirm stability.

Summary

In some cases, random NVR reboots are intentional system responses to persistent over-bitrate streaming from a camera on a Fixed Plan. Adjusting the camera settings to match the plan’s specifications should prevent further reboots and ensure optimal performance.
